Noted littérateur Dr. Lakshmi Nandan Bora no more

Guwahati, June 03 (NKTV): In another loss for the people of Assam, noted littérateur Dr. Lakshmi Nandan Bora breathed his last today morning.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has offered his condolences and stated that Dr. Bora’s demise is a great loss for the state. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, offering his condolences, said that Dr. Bora enriched the Assamese literature world.

Born in 1932 at Hatichung in Nagaon district of Assam, Dr. Lakshmi Nandan Bora pursued his education from Cotton College and University of Calcutta. In 1955, he started his professional career at St. Anthony’s College and later on worked at JB College, Nagaon College and Cotton College as well.

The Sahitya Academy awardee worked as a faculty member at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat for most of his career.

Dr. Bora wrote his first short story, Bhaona, in 1954, which was published in the Assamese magazine Ramdhenu. He published his first novel – Gonga Silonir Pakhi – in 1963, which earned immense critical acclaim and has been translated into 11 languages; it was also later made into a film in 1976. His novel, Patal Bhairavi, won the Sahitya Academy Award in 1988. He had authored more than 60 books in total.

Dr. Bora also served as the President of Assam Sahitya Sabha and as a member of the Planning Commission of Assam.
