Goalpara turns into dumping ground as municipal workers continue protest

Goalpara Town has been converted virtually into a dumping ground as the town’s waste collectors and sweepers have been staging protest for the last four days.

The garbage collectors and sweepers have gone on strike since 13th April as they have not been paid for the past five months. The workers have been demanding a salary hike and solutions to their other perennial problems for a long time. The angry protestors have informed that despite submitting written pleas to the Goalpara Municipal Board from time to time, their problems have remained unheard.

Although authorities have assured them of better pay after every request, the same has not been implemented. This, along with the non-payment of salary for five months, have compelled the workers to go on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met. The protestors were seen shouting slogans at the Natun Bazar municipal market of Goalpara.

As the garbage from Goalpara town has not been collected for the past four days, garbage mounds have accumulated at several places across the town. With overflowing garbage bins the hygiene of Goalpara now stands compromised amid the serious pandemic situation.
