What should the new Assam government worry about first? The deteriorating COVID-19 pandemic situation or the rising number of rape cases, especially that of minors. A day after two juveniles were found raped and murdered in Dhubri, reports of the rape of a four year old girl has surfaced.
The heinous incident happened in Bilortoli village of Kalgachia in Barpeta district. As per the family members of the victim, the child was taken to the paddy field by one Abdul Latif of the same village. The accused is 18 years old.
The child was later found covered in blood and was repeatedly taking the name of the accused with fear. Although the family of the victim went to the accused’s house to enquire about the incident, they were chased away by his family.
A report has been filed against Abdul Latif and four of his family members in the Kalgachia Police Station. However, the minor victim’s family has alleged that no action has been taken by the police and the accused has not been arrested yet.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, on 10th May, after taking over the responsibility as the Chief Minister of Assam, had said that strict and appropriate action will be taken in all cases of crime against women. Women will be made to feel safe in the state, he said.
