Promiment journalist and litterateur Homen Borgohain passes away

Promiment journalist and litterateur Homen Borgohain passed away at 6.58 am on Wednesday morning at GNRC. He died at the age of 89. A few days ago he had contracted Covid-19 a second time and he was rushed to the hospital after he suffered a cardiac arrest in the wee hours.

The noted writer was born in a small village of Lakhimpur, where he did his schooling. Later, Homen Borgohain came to Guwahati to study in Cotton College.

For his immense body of work and contributions to Assamese literature he was decorated with the Sahitya Akademi Award, Assam Valley Literary Award and Nilamoni Phukan Award from Asom Sahitya Sabha. Some of the famous novels of Homen Borgohain are Subala, Pita Putra, Timirtirtha, Kushilab, Astarag and Edinar Diary.

Homen Borgohain first edited an Assamese weekly newspaper ‘Nilachal’ and later he edited another Assamese weekly ‘Nagarik’. He also served as staff reporter in a Bengali daily newspaper ‘Ajkal’. Until his death he was working as the editor in chief of Assamese daily Niyomiya Barta.

He had also remained the editor of Amar Asom and Asom Bani, which are reputed newspapers of Assam. Homen Borgohain also worked as an Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer.

In his death, Assam has lost one of its literary giants and it will remain a void that will be difficult to fill.
